Chapter Ten

Harper

My heart hammered against my ribs hard enough that Riley could probably see it. I hadn’t been this nervous since high school when I asked Dakota Sanders to prom. I’d never once been the girl who waited for a guy to make a move. My honesty wasn’t new. But I also wasn’t a magician who could make someone like me when they didn’t.

This was my moment of truth with Riley. How he answered this question determined whether I made a real play for him or stayed the course and remained the friend he hooked up with once.

“No,” he said quietly.

“What’s that?” I asked as if I hadn’t clearly heard him and let my grin grow. I’d heard exactly what he said but I wished for him to sound more confident in his answer.

“No, Harper,” he said his gaze burning into me. “We didn’t use each other. But you know I haven’t been in a relationship for a really long time.”

As soon as he began the second part, I started shaking my head. I didn’t care how long it’d been since he’d committed to someone. Just as long as if we got together, he was committed. “And I’m not asking you for one, Riley. Not yet anyway.”

He nodded. I’d given him something to think about and for Riley it was probably weighing heavily on his mind so I decided to distract him. There’d been something I wanted to ask for some time.

“That scar on your leg,” I began, pointing at his left thigh. “Is that what I think it is?”

Riley swallowed hard and nodded not taking his eyes off me. That was the scar left by the bullet.

“So you were shot?” I asked the obvious. He nodded again. “Did it hurt?”

“Of course it fucking hurt,” he snapped then closed his eyes and took a deep breath. “Sorry. Yeah, it hurt.”

“Will you tell me what happened?” I wanted to know everything about him because I was interested but also so he’d know that I actually did care about what happened to him. Past or present. But in the end, he had a choice as to whether he wanted to tell his story or not. If he chose not to, I wouldn’t ask him again and would wait for him to offer.

“We were on patrol. There was a sniper, two actually. It happened so fucking fast, I’m not sure who went down first, but three of us were shot before they were taken out. When I saw Wyatt on the ground, not moving, not knowing if he was alive or dead…” He shook his head again and took a deep breath. “That fucked me up. I ran over, forgetting the pain. I had to make sure he made it.”

“Wyatt got injured, too?” Zoey had never mentioned that to me and I wondered if she knew.

He nodded. “Zoey didn’t tell you that?”

I shook my head, eyes wide in surprise over what I was hearing and the fact that my best friend had known the whole time and never said a word.
